Torsion Springs or Extension Springs?

There are 2 main types of garage door springs, torsion and extension springs. Here’s how you can tell which type your garage door uses:

1. Torsion Springs:
   
   • Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening.
   • They work by twisting or “torqueing” as the door opens or closes, storing and releasing energy to help lift and lower the door.
   • Torsion springs are considered safer because they are typically located in a closed, metal shaft which reduces the risk of them snapping or coming loose.
2. Extension Springs:
   
   • Extension springs are mounted vertically on either side of the garage door or above the horizontal tracks.
   • They work by extending and contracting as the door moves, providing the necessary force to lift and lower it.
   • Extension springs are typically less expensive than torsion springs but are considered to be less safe due to the potential for them to fly off if they break.
